Early Hlubi Materials from c.1873 - 2008 and associated items

Scope and Content

[Source - Benathi Marufu for FHYA, 2023, using material provided by Steven Kotze, Justine Wintjes, Lailah Hisham, Zukisa Madyibi, Robert Hart and Sinazo Mtshemla: The presentation 'Convening the Hlubi Archive'on EMANDULO references a wide variety of materials pertinent to the history of amaHlubi. Wherever possible, the FHYA seeks to make these materials available on EMANDULO, either in this collection of Early Hlubi Materials or in the FHYA Depot. Where materials are only available elsewhere, 'Convening the Hlubi Archive' provides links to those materials in other locations wherever possible. The EMANDULO collection of Early Hlubi Materials seeks to convene, in one place online, digital versions of materials pertinent to Hlubi history previously scattered across the region and in institutions around the world. These include: recorded oral accounts (notably from the Killie Campbell Africana Library of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's James Stuart Collection, and the Van Warmelo Collection at the University of Pretoria); newspaper articles (most notably the series of articles published by Magema Magwaza Fuze in 1915, 1919 and 1920); collections of material culture (beadwork and costume items, ceramics, grasswork, carved wooden artefacts, weapons from, amongst others, Iziko Museums of South Africa (Iziko), the Joan Broster Beadwork collection at Walter Sisulu University (WSU), the Estelle Hamilton-Welsh collection at the University of Fort Hare; and the KwaZulu-Natal Museum); and photographs (inter alia, from the Duggan-Cronin Gallery at McGregor Museum, Kimberley, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Archives, Western Cape Provincial Archives and the Cory Library). The collection is augmented by a digital collection of early published books on aspects of Hlubi history (see discussion of these titles in 'Convening the Hlubi Archive') that are located in EMANDULO's FHYA Depot. The EMANDULO collection of Early Hlubi Materials is a work-in-progress. The collection of material is far from complete and users of EMANDULO, as well as collecting institutions, family associations and individuals, are invited to contribute further materials, or links to further materials. This can be done using the contribution function at the bottom of each archival page. It is also possible to arrange to make a contribution by contacting the Five Hundred Year Archive project, 500yeararchive@gmail.com]
