An FHYA selection of material that has been claimed to have belonged to the Hlubi ruler Langalibalele kaMthimkhulu (c.1814 - 1889) and his household

Scope and Content

[Source - Steven Kotze for FHYA, 2023: This series contains personal objects believed to have been the possessions of Langalibalele kaMthimkhulu or were from his domestic household. These objects are currently held in a number of museums and have been subject to different custodial regimes since 1873. Many of the objects were confiscated from Langalibalele at the time of his arrest in Leribe c. 13-14 December 1873 and distributed among British officials based in Lesotho at that time. The weapons and wooden staffs in the Iziko collection were donated in 1947 by a relative of H. E. R. Bright, who was second in command to Charles Griffith in 1873. The shield and ceremonial staff in the British Museum, as well as two related items which may not have belonged to Langalibalele, were donated in 1936 by the daughter of General A. A. T. Cunynhame, who served as a military commander in South African from 1873 to 1878. Items of regalia in the Hlubi royal collection were returned by the British government on 10 October 2004. The Iziko collection contains, in addition, four items from the domestic household of Langalibalele which were produced during his exile at the Cape on the farm Uitvugt from 1875 to 1887 and were given to Lucy Lloyd during visits she made to the farm.]
