Langalibalele kaMthimkhulu, letter 1
Scope and Content
[Source of metadata - Steven Kotze for FHYA, 2024, using information from Paul Mills of Clarke's Africana & Rare Books: A letter from Charles Duncan Griffith, Governor's Agent and Chief Magistrate of British Basutoland, written from the Police Camp near Leribe in Lesotho to Albert Allison, commander of the Natal Field Force then camped in the vicinity of Letele Pass, approximately 30km away from Leribe. The letter was written on three sides of an A5 note in black ink which has water stains on it. It included information that Langalibelele, together with five of his sons and several of his izinduna were prisoners of the British authorities, having surrendered themselves on 11 December 1873. Further details included Griffith taking possession of about 5000 head of cattle and horses, while approximately 300 Hlubi men had also surrendered and given up their arms consisting of guns and spears. Griffith requested that Allison "remain with your Force either on the top or immediately at the foot of the mountains on this side as the presence of your Force may lead to a good deal of confusion among the Basutos on this side."]
