Convening the Hlubi Archive

Convening the Hlubi Archive

Convening the Hlubi Archive offers engaging and accessible entry points – currently in the form of a timeline, podcasts and artwork, with more to come – into a growing collection of material that makes up the Hlubi archive on EMANDULO. This presentation provides a window into the variety of materials already available online on EMANDULO. More than a portal to the existing online collection, Convening the Hlubi Archive is also a year-long  invitation to institutions, family associations and individuals to contribute materials to the online archive.

Between 1915 and 1920 Magema Magwaza Fuze published a series of newspaper articles in Ilanga lase Natal about the history of the Hlubi people and Chief Langalibalele kaMthimkhulu’s dispute with the colonial government of Natal in the 1870s. EMANDULO used the texts of these articles to create a four-episode podcast titled ‘Defending Nkosi Langalibalele’.
