Attributions and conjectures [Source - Michelle House for FHYA, 2020, using AMAFA materials: Diagnostic pottery are those with decorations or a piece that contains a part of the profile of the vessel. Southern African pottery is made from clay. Because it is baked, it preserves well in the archaeological record. Pottery was used for storage, beer brewing, food distribution and collecting water. Pot-makers decorated their vessels and there seems to be a correlation between linguistic groups and decoration type, the shape of a vessel and decoration placement. Scientific techniques can also identify what was stored in the pot by analysing the residues on the pieces of pottery found in excavation.]
