Baleka ka Mpitikazi

Scope and Content

[Source - Carolyn Hamilton for FHYA, 2021: File contains a published version of James Stuart's conversations with Baleka ka Mpitikazi, from an edited volume of the James Stuart Archive by Colin de B. Webb and John Wright. The published edited version is based on the editors' annotated photocopies of James Stuart's handwritten notes of his conversation with Baleka ka Mpitikazi. The original notes are in the custody of the Killie Campbell Africana Library. The Related Items section currently contains either a placeholder for the annotated photocopies or the photocopies, as well as either a placeholder for the FHYA's Hyperlinked Archival Research Tool (which links the photocopies and the published text) or the relevant section of the Hyperlinked Archival Research Tool. The Related Items section also includes the Killie Campbell Africana Library's James Stuart Papers inventory and John Wright's summary of the James Stuart Papers.]

Title

Baleka ka Mpitikazi

[ Source of title : Editor, John Wright, notes in an email to FHYA in 2020: In working on the JSA, vol. 1, pp. 4 et seq, the editors read Stuart's handwritten notes as giving Baleka's father as Mpitikazi. A re-read of the notes makes clear that it should be Mpitikezi. In addition, Stuart makes clear at a particular point in the original text (Stuart Papers, File 58, nbk. 16, p. 83) that the 'p' and the 't' in the name should both be aspirated, so in modern orthography the name would be spelt Mphithikezi. This is the form that the editors should have used in the endnotes. ]
