S.E.K. Mqhayi’s life and writings: a timeline

Reaching back in time to the birth of S.E.K. Mqhayi’s grandfather and forward in time to the unveiling of his memorial in 1951, this timeline spans his past, his present and his future.

Birth of Krune, son of Mqhayi at Jadu, near Seymour. When Khona, son of King Maqoma entered the initiation school, Krune was appointed his attendant.

Death of Xhosa prophet, evangelist and hymn-writer Ntsikana. Jeff Opland mentions that Mqhayi maintained a lifelong reverence for Ntsikana, son of Gabha, (Opland, Mqhayi (2017), p xxii).

Outbreak of 6th Frontier War (War of Hintsa) caused by grievous wounding of Maqoma’s brother, Xhoxho by Lt William Sutton of the British army’s 75th Regiment.

Birth of Ziwani, son of Krune. Death of Mqhayi, the father of Krune, killed during the War of Hintsa.

Killing of King Hintsa kaKhawuta, who had reigned over the powerful Xhosa kingdom since 1820, and who was defending his people and their land against a British invasion.
