Unqiyane wax made from insects

Scope and Content

[Source - Chloe Rushovich for FHYA, 2021, using an entry in the KwaZulu-Natal Museum accessions register for 677: "Mass of scale insects (Ceroplastes sp.) (1) as collected [677A] (2) after heating over a fire [677B]. The wax (Unqiyane) is used for making the head-ring". This wax would be used alongside an isicoco polisher, such as the one found by Tim Maggs in at uMgungundlovu in 1973, which is housed with the 1975 material excavated at uMgungundlovu by Martin Hall.]
