Archival History

[Source - John Wright for the FHYA, 2017: The photocopies used by the editors to prepare the published volumes were made by staff of the Campbell Collections in the period 1971-3 from originals in the James Stuart Papers selected by John Wright during his initial examination of the collection in 1971. A much smaller number was made after Wright had carried out a second examination of the collection in the period 1978-80 to identify material that he had omitted or missed the first time. After the photocopies had been made, Wright sorted them into folders under the name of each of Stuart’s interlocutors. Where Stuart conversed with more than one interlocutor at a time, the notes are ordered under the name of the main interlocutor. On each folder he wrote the name of the interlocutor, together with a number indicating the position of the folder in the overall alphabetical sequence of interlocutors, which eventually totalled 185. Within each folder, Wright organised the photocopied notes into chronological order according to the dates – as noted by Stuart – on which they were recorded. In some cases, particularly for notes that he made in the period 1899 to 1904, Stuart made extended transcriptions from his original rough notes. In these cases, Wright placed the photocopies of the rough notes immediately before or after the photocopies of the pertinent transcriptions. For each folder, and included inside it, Wright made a list of the contents, giving the file numbers, notebook numbers and page numbers of the originals from which the photocopies were made. The pencilled notes on many of the photocopies were made by Wright in the course of his editing and translating work, which continues in the present (2018). FHYA digital content assistant, Kathrine Garrun, oversaw the handling and scanning of Wright’s photocopies and completed the file processing in 2017. The photocopies on the FHYA sites do not include any changes made by John Wright subsequently.]
