Exploring uMgungundlovu

Scope and Content

[Source - Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2022: A presentation on uMgungundlovu, the capital of King Dingane of the Zulu Kingdom between 1829 and 1839. The presentation explores how uMgungundlovu formed the political pivot of the region and discusses the site's layout and the arrangement of the royal household. It also discusses some of the main sources of historical evidence on uMgungundlovu which can be found in the James Stuart Papers (see also the James Stuart Archive, edited by Colin de B. Webb and John Wright, 1976-) and in James Stuart's book uKulumetule (Incwadi ye zindaba za Bantu ba kwa Zulu, na ba seNatala), published in 1925. The presentation also discusses the arrival of the first missionaries to the capital, including their travelogues and witness evidence. It also examines the archaeological excavation of the site and its status as a heritage site. The presentation also offers several special features: a bibliography; a podcast; original music, a brief write-up about an isicoco polisher uncovered at the site; and an extended piece about the journey between uMgungundlovu and what is now called Lesotho.]
