Scope and Content
[Source - Benathi Marufu for FHYA, 2023: In 1940, Mqhayi submitted a manuscript on Ulwaluko (circumcision) to the Lovedale Press, in which he argued that the Xhosa practice of circumcision was compatible with Christianity and Ukuphakama komzi oNtsundu ngokwesiko lakowabo ('The growth and development of the Native people according to their customs and traditions'). In the early 20th century, the initiation debate was part of an on-going and important theme, not only within the mainstream churches, but across a public space that included newspapers. The Lovedale Press rejected the manuscript, citing it as too controversial and referring to the lack of Christian unanimity on the subject. There is no known copy of this manuscript still in existence.]
