Scope and Content

[Source - Chloe Rushovich and Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2022, using material provided by Hlonipha Mokoena: Magema Magwaza Fuze was a prolific writer and commentator, working between c.1857 and 1922. Fuze worked extensively with Bishop Colenso and his daughter Harriette. He was also closely associated with King Dinuzulu and his family, and worked with him on and off until 1904. In 1915, Fuze began writing serialised articles for Ilanga Lase Natal. In 1922, Fuze's book Abantu Abamnyama was privately published. This was the first ever book written in Zulu by a Zulu author. The FHYA selection of materials relating to Fuze consists of materials written by Fuze for the Inkanyiso Natal Society, Macmillan’s Magazine, Ilanga Lase Natal, and Ipepa lo Hlanga; correspondence between Fuze and others, correspondence written about Fuze; miscellaneous published and unpublished materials written by Fuze; and unattributed materials possibly written by Fuze; as well as typescripts of newspaper articles and letters created by the FHYA. The bulk of the material and associated information comes from the research collection of Hlonipha Mokoena, a pre-eminent Fuze scholar. The FHYA has organised the material into series, files and items.]
