Scope and Content
[Source - Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2021: A paper by Norman Etherington submitted for the Mfecane Aftermath conference held at University of the Witwatersrand in September in 1991. The paper provides a historiographical overview of the so-called Great Trek and examines how its premises overlap with those of the Mfecane. According to Etherington, revising the notion of the Mfecane to acknowledge the impact of European external pressures necessitates a re-examination of the Great Trek in turn.]

[Source - Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2021: Written by Norman Etherington ahead of the Mfecane Aftermath conference in September 1991. Copies were printed and distributed for the conference's attendees, including Jan-Bart Gewald. The paper remained in Gewald's possession after the conference. C. 2014, he donated it along with all of the other Mfecane Aftermath conference papers to Leiden University Library. In 2021, Gewald's deposit of Mfecane Aftermath conference papers was uncovered by Ettore Morelli of FHYA. Following a request by FHYA, the papers were digitised by Leiden University Libraries for use in the FHYA's Spotlight on the Mfecane presentation.
