Umlando, ukuqamba and the stating their own views: recalibrating the history of intellectual thought in the KwaZulu-Natal region (draft)
Scope and Content
[Henry Fagan for EMANDULO, 2021: A digital draft of a piece written by Carolyn Hamilton in February 2019. Hamilton continued to work on and edit her piece. A version was presented at the 45th annual conference of the African Literature Association in Ohio in May 2019. A further version was later published in July 2021 by Wits University Press as a chapter in the book Public Intellectuals in South Africa: Critical Voices from the Past. The piece argues that a categorical distinction has been drawn between contemporary intellectuals and 'authentic tribal informants' and that this distinction is pervasive and requires interrogation.]
