History
[Source - Henry Fagan for FHYA, 2022, using information acquired from Wikipedia: Charles Brownlee was a politician and a writer. Brownlee worked on the Xhosa-Cape Colony frontier between 1846 and 1872, predominantly as a peacemaker and cultural intermediary. He was made Secretary for Native Affairs of the Cape Colony in 1872 and enacted policies intended as a compromise between forceful assimilation and segregation. His position was disbanded in 1878 when the Colonial Government suspended the Cape Colony's elected parliament. Brownlee then became Chief Magistrate of Griqualand East, where he remained until his retirement in 1885. A book by Brownlee, Reminiscences of [K-word] Life and History, was published in 1896.]
