It as printed in Pietermaritzburd on a press provided by the Anglican Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. The newspaper was intended to be a voice for missionaries, as well as for newly chrisitanised Africans. It helped to promote the debate among the kholwa. In 1891, Inkanyiso changed its names to Inkanyiso lasa Natal, and became a weekly newspaper. In 1895, a Zulu syndicate bought Inkanyiso lase Natal, making it the first black-owned newspaper in Natal.
